UQ Animal Welfare & Ethics SIG

The Animal Welfare and Ethics (AWE) SIG at the University of Queensland brings together students who care about improving animal welfare and want to better understand the complex situations that arise in veterinary and animal-related fields.

We look at welfare across a wide range of settings — from production systems to shelter and rehabilitation medicine, animal research, and cases involving neglect or abuse. Our focus is on practical, evidence-based approaches that aim to improve animal well-being while recognising real-world challenges veterinarians face within the industry.
Through guest speakers and open discussions, we talk through the kinds of dilemmas we’re likely to encounter in practice and explore how to navigate them thoughtfully and professionally.
We know these conversations can be challenging at times. AWE SIG is committed to creating a respectful and inclusive space where different perspectives can be shared and explored together.
